# KP index and geomagnetic storms

> The planetary KP index, current and forecast, with a limit you choose: high values disturb GPS accuracy and the compass of your drone.

The **KP index** measures the geomagnetic activity of the Earth on a scale from 0 to 9. During geomagnetic storms, GPS positions get less accurate and compass readings less reliable: the drone can drift while hovering or ask for a compass calibration.

Drone Weather Forecast shows the **current and forecast KP** from GFZ Potsdam and compares it with the maximum you set. When the KP goes over it, the verdict warns you.
