> 129 drone zones in India, 129 of them restricted: the largest airport zones, the official map and how to get authorization to fly in a restricted zone.

*Last updated: 2026-09-17*

DJI's GEO zone database lists **129 drone zones in India**, **129 of them restricted**, mostly around airports and military bases. Below are the zone types, the largest restricted zones, the rules at a glance and the official links to request permission when you need to fly inside a zone.

## Drone rules in India at a glance

- **Aviation authority:** [Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)](https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/jsp/dgca/InventoryList/headerblock/drones/RPAS.jsp)
- **Maximum height:** 120 m (400 ft) above the ground, unless an authorization allows more. Only 60 m between 8 and 12 km from an operational airport's perimeter.
- **Registration:** Drones must be registered and get a Unique Identification Number (UIN) under the Drone Rules, 2021; a remote pilot certificate is needed except for nano drones (up to 250 g) and non-commercial micro drones (up to 2 kg). - States, union territories and law enforcement can declare temporary red zones for up to 96 hours, shown on Digital Sky.

## How to get authorization to fly in a restricted zone

Steps and links from official sources, checked in September 2026. Rules change: confirm on the official website (DGCA) before you fly.

1. Before every flight, check the zone and any temporary red zones on the Digital Sky airspace map; this is mandatory. [Official page](https://digitalsky.aai.aero/)
2. Green zone: no permission is needed. Yellow zone (for example 5–8 km from an operational airport's perimeter): get prior permission from the air traffic control authority for the area (AAI, IAF, Navy, HAL…). [Official page](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1757850&reg=48&lang=2)
3. Red zone: flights are allowed only with Central Government permission. [Official page](https://egazette.gov.in/WriteReadData/2021/229221.pdf)
4. Flying a DJI drone? With the authorization in hand, request an unlock on [DJI FlySafe](https://fly-safe.dji.com/unlock/unlock-request). DJI's unlock does not replace the authority's permission.

## Check zones and weather before you fly

## Frequently asked questions

### Where can't you fly a drone in India?

Around airports, military bases and other restricted areas. DJI's database lists 129 restricted zones in India; the official map is Digital Sky airspace map. Temporary restrictions can appear at any time, so check before every flight.

### Do I need permission to fly a drone near an airport in India?

### How high can you fly a drone in India?

Up to 120 m (400 ft) above the ground under the general rules, unless an authorization allows more. Near airports the limit can be lower, or zero. Only 60 m between 8 and 12 km from an operational airport's perimeter.
