Drone rules in Germany at a glance
- Aviation authority: Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA)
- Airspace authorization: DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung
- Maximum height: 120 m (400 ft) above the ground, unless an authorization allows more. Lower inside control zones.
- Registration: Operators of drones over 249 g, or with a camera or other sensor that records personal data, register online with the LBA and put the e-ID on each drone. Official page

- Liability insurance is mandatory for every drone, and proof must be carried when flying.
- Within 1 km of an airport boundary and in the 5 km approach corridors, only specific-category operations are possible.
How to get authorization to fly in a restricted zone

- Check the dipul Map Tool for geographical zones and control zones at your location. Official page
- Inside a control zone you need an ATC clearance. Since 6 August 2026, the inner area of the 15 DFS airports always needs an online application about 14 days ahead; in the outer area a general clearance covers flights up to 25, 45 or 100 m depending on the zone. Official page
- Apply for DFS airports with the DFS online form; for other control zones contact the local aerodrome control service. Official page
- Within 1.5 km of smaller aerodromes, get consent from the aerodrome's supervision, AFIS or operator; for other zones, from the body named for that zone. Official page
