Short answer: not with most consumer drones. DJI Mini, Air and Mavic models, like most camera drones, have no water-resistance rating. Only some enterprise drones carry an IP rating, such as the DJI Matrice 30 series (IP55).
What rain does to a drone
- Electronics: water can reach the motors, the ESCs and the battery contacts through vents and seams and cause a short circuit, sometimes minutes after landing.
- Sensors: drops on the vision sensors confuse obstacle avoidance and downward positioning; drops on the lens ruin the footage.
- Flight: wet propellers lose efficiency and the drone uses more battery to hold altitude.
- Visibility: rain usually comes with low clouds and poor visibility, which makes keeping the drone in sight harder.
What an IP rating means
An IP code has two digits: the first for dust, the second for water. A drone rated IP43 tolerates light spray; IP55 tolerates water jets from any direction. No consumer drone is waterproof: even a rated drone should not fly in heavy rain.
How to check before you fly
- Look at the hourly precipitation probability, not only the daily icon. A dry morning can turn wet within an hour.
- Check visibility and cloud cover too: drizzle and fog often come together.
- If rain starts, land at once, dry the drone with the battery removed and let it air-dry before charging.
Drone Weather Forecast marks an hour red when the precipitation probability goes over your limit (50 % by default, adjustable) or visibility drops below your minimum (5 km by default), so a wet window shows up before you drive to the spot.
